Development of a Sustainable Remediation System to Remove TCE from Groundwater

چکیده

Karst aquifers are a particular type of groundwater system that supplies drinking water in Puerto Rico, as well as in several U.S. regions and around the world. The karst aquifers contain cave systems that are vulnerable to contamination from toxic chemicals, such as TCE. This is because these contaminants tend to be trapped in the rock formations as nonaqueous phase liquids (known as NAPLs) and there is little opportunity for their dissolved phase to be filtered by soil or to become bound to bedrock while flowing through the systems.

Anaerobic Degradation of Chlorinated Hydrocarbons in Groundwater Aquifers or "Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Degradation"

Groundwater contamination by chlorinated hydrocarbons, such as tetrachloroethene (PCE) or trichloroethene (TCE), is a major concern throughout the United States. A developing strategy for the remediation of PCE and TCE contaminated aquifers is anaerobic biodegradation. From a TCE contaminated groundwater site, microorganisms were enriched with the ability to anaerobically convert PCE and TCE co...

The DNAPL Remediation Challenge: Is There a Case for Source Depletion?

Permanganate remediation was conducted in southern Florida at a small industrial site with TCE and 1,1,1-TCAcontamination down to 70 ft bgs in a sand aquifer. The permanganate solution was injected into the DNAPL source zone(30 ft diameter in plan view) where a small mass of residual TCE DNAPL caused this zone to have TCE concentrationsexceeding 10,000 μg/L, with small zones approac...

Changes in contaminant mass discharge from DNAPL source mass depletion: evaluation at two field sites.

Changes in contaminant fluxes resulting from aggressive remediation of dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) source zone were investigated at two sites, one at Hill Air Force Base (AFB), Utah, and the other at Ft. Lewis Military Reservation, Washington. Passive Flux Meters (PFM) and a variation of the Integral Pumping Test (IPT) were used to measure fluxes in ten wells installed along a transec...

Chlorinated ethene source remediation: lessons learned.

Chlorinated solvents such as trichloroethene (TCE) and tetrachloroethene (PCE) are widespread groundwater contaminants often released as dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs). These contaminants are difficult to remediate, particularly their source zones. This review summarizes the progress made in improving DNAPL source zone remediation over the past decade, and is structured to highlight th...

Application of Chemical Oxidation Followed by Anaerobic Degradation Remedial Technologies for Trichloroethene in a Multi-System Aquifer

Remedial enhancements to an existing pump-and-treat (P&T) system were selected for a pilot study to address trichloroethene (TCE)-impacted groundwater within a fractured bedrock system extending into a residential neighborhood. The focus for implementing the remedial enhancements was the farthest downgradient area of the dissolved plume not fully responding to P&T system operations due to pumpi...
